Accessibility Statement

ISBL is committed to making our website accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. This statement explains what we do to meet that commitment and how to reach us if something isn't working for you.

1. Our Commitment

The International Society of Black Latinos (ISBL) believes that every person — regardless of ability — deserves full access to information about our organization, our programs, and our community. Accessibility is not an afterthought for us; it is part of how we serve our community.

We are committed to ensuring that our website is accessible to people with visual, auditory, cognitive, and motor disabilities. This work is ongoing — we audit our site regularly and address issues as we find them.

Our accessibility work is guided by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title III, which applies to websites operated by places of public accommodation, as well as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1.

2. Conformance Status

We aim to conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA. WCAG is an internationally recognized standard developed by the W3C that defines how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities.

Level AA is the standard most widely recognized by accessibility laws and regulations, including the ADA and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. It covers a broad range of accessibility improvements beyond the basic Level A requirements.

We are partially conformant — meaning most of our content meets WCAG 2.1 Level AA, but we are aware of some areas still being improved. Those known limitations are described in Section 4 below.

3. Accessibility Features on This Site

We have built the following accessibility features directly into this website:

Text Resizer Increase or decrease the text size across the site without breaking the layout.
High Contrast Mode Switches the site to a high-contrast color scheme to improve readability for users with low vision.
Grayscale Mode Converts the site to grayscale for users who find color-heavy designs distracting or difficult.
Readable Fonts Toggle Switches to a plain, highly legible font that is easier to read for users with dyslexia or cognitive differences.
Links Underline Adds underlines to all hyperlinks, making them visually distinct from surrounding text without relying on color alone.
Cursor Size Enlarges the cursor for users with motor impairments who need a larger target area.
English / Spanish Toggle Full bilingual support — all site content is available in both English (EN) and Spanish (ES), with a persistent language preference.

These tools are accessible via the panel fixed to the bottom-right corner of every page.

Additional accessibility measures

  • Semantic HTML5 markup throughout the site, including proper heading hierarchy (h1 through h3).
  • All images include descriptive alt text.
  • Navigation menus use proper aria-label attributes and keyboard-navigable structure.
  • Forms include associated labels for every input field.
  • Color contrast ratios meet or exceed the WCAG 2.1 AA minimum (4.5:1 for normal text).
  • The site is fully navigable by keyboard (Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Escape).
  • Modals and overlays (such as event detail and RSVP modals) trap focus correctly and close on Escape.
  • The site uses HTTPS, ensuring a secure connection.

4. Known Limitations

While we work continuously to improve accessibility, we are aware of the following current limitations:

  • Embedded YouTube videos: YouTube's embedded video player has its own accessibility features controlled by Google. We cannot fully control the accessibility of the player interface itself. We recommend using YouTube's native player settings for closed captions and keyboard shortcuts.
  • Some older photo content: A small number of archival photos from events may have incomplete or generic alt text. We are working to audit and update these.
  • PDF documents: Any PDF files linked from this site may not be fully accessible to screen readers. We do not currently publish many PDFs, but are committed to providing accessible alternatives when we do.

We are actively working on these limitations. If you encounter any barrier not listed here, please tell us — your feedback helps us prioritize improvements.

5. Technical Specifications

The ISBL website relies on the following technologies for accessibility:

  • HTML5
  • CSS3 (including custom properties and media queries)
  • JavaScript (vanilla, no framework dependencies)
  • WAI-ARIA attributes for dynamic content and interactive components

The site has been tested for accessibility using:

  • Keyboard-only navigation
  • Browser developer tools (Chrome Lighthouse, axe)
  • Manual review against WCAG 2.1 criteria

We aim to support the following browsers and assistive technologies: current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge; screen readers including NVDA (Windows) and VoiceOver (macOS and iOS).

6. Feedback and Contact

We want to hear from you. If you encounter a barrier on this website — a page that is hard to read, a form you cannot complete, a video without captions, or anything else that makes it difficult for you to access our content — please let us know.

When you report an issue, please include:

  • The URL (web address) of the page where you experienced the problem.
  • A brief description of the issue and what you were trying to do.
  • The browser and assistive technology you were using, if applicable.

We will respond within 5 business days and work to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

7. Formal Complaints

If you are not satisfied with our response to an accessibility concern, you have the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, which enforces Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Information about filing a complaint is available at ADA.gov.

8. About This Statement

This accessibility statement was prepared in June 2026 and is reviewed at least annually. It reflects the state of the ISBL website as of that date. We update this statement whenever significant improvements are made or new limitations are identified.

This statement references WCAG 2.1 published by the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title III.
