International Society of Black Latinos “From Trauma to Transformation”

“Afro- Latinos Journey through the Americas and Caribbean.” This very special philanthropic event “1943 Afro-Cuban Jazz Invades New York” will be held from 3:00pm to 5:00pm (dancing to follow) on Sunday, October 14, 2018 at Candela La Brea, 831 South La Brea Ave. (8th Street & La Brea) Los Angeles California, 90036.
The gala celebrates the legacy of our Afro- Latino heritage spotlighting the cultural traditions through music, art and dance. Our past years’ galas honored community leaders, and presented scholarships to several deserving youth. This year’s honorees are, Glynn and Jo-Ann Turman (actor/philanthropists), Lisa Vidal (actor/philanthropist) , Reverend Kevin Sauls (community leader), Norko Tibisay Regalado (philanthropist) and Justo Almario (legendary musician). Past recipients have been Manny Mota (L.A. Dodgers coach and former Major League Baseball player), Carlos Alvarez (host, “En La Mañana” show in Super Estrella 107.1), Lili Bernard (visual artist and actor), D. Chann Berry (director/producer), Andrea Berry (Sr. V.P., Broadcast Media Services, Fox Networks Engineering and Operations), Irma Peñalver (fashion designer for Cuban pop icon & Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz), Anaida Colon-Muniz (Associate Professor of Scholarly Practice, Chapman University), Barbara Perkins (co-founder, International Black Women’s Public Policy Institute), Honorable Roland Yorke (State of California Consulate General of Belize) and Darrell Brown (regional senior vice president U.S. Bank). Past scholarship recipients were: Azmera Hammouri-Davis (USC Freshman), Jose Gordillo (Manual Arts High School, Senior) and Manolo Calderón (Foshay Learning Center, Freshman) to name a few. Juanita Palacios-Sims is the founder and president.
ISBL is a 501 (c) (3) corporation established on October 10, 2010 (10-10-10). Using an emphasis on academia, character building, self-awareness, social acceptance, leadership development, and culturally/artistic enrichment. We aim to reinforce the importance of building a stronger and unified community across socio-economic, gender and racial lines. Our goal is to reach our youth and adults, particularly in high risk populations, through workshops/seminars designed to promote dialogue in neutral and safe school environments. Proceeds from this event will support ISBL’s work in schools, communities and in several of our initiatives.
